Together as One

I feel his muscles coil and retract beneath me,
He eyes the jumps ahead with glee.
Against the bit he pulls,
Ever so eager to show these fools
And waiting to do his deed.

Thump goes his hoof, Swish goes his tail.
Once let go, he thunders like a thunderstorm of hail.
My arms go forward, giving him his head
The reins soft on his mouth, very much like thread.
As I lean against his neck, over the water we sail.

Over the brick wall we go,
And land, careful ever so.
Onto the next and so on we make our way.
We’ve waited so long for this day.
For more speed, over his back I lay low.

Even though we haven’t finished,
I know our competition is diminished.
I know we’ll place first,
Full pride and joy for us both, I’ll want to burst.
After a week’s rest more training will be sentenced.

As we cross the finish line, I know we won.
Back home, hugs and kisses will come by the tons.
Not wanting to slow, against the bit he leans.
We have completed our dream,
Together as one.
