Hernando DeSoto
Hernando De Soto was a Spanish explorer who sailed the Atlantic Ocean. He was the first European to explore Florida and the southeastern US. DeSoto was the first European to discover the Mississippi River.
De Soto was born in the Spain. In 1524, he went on his first expedition to South America. De Soto returned to Spain in 1536.
In May 1539, De Soto landed nine ships with over six hundred tweny men and two hundred twenty surviving horses at Charlotte Harbor, Florida. They spent four years searching for gold and silver and exploring the area.
DeSoto died during the explorations and was buried on the banks of the Mississippi River in June, 1542.
