- Installing
the AVG Antivirus
Software
- Removing
existing anti virus
software
-
Vermilion Parish Public Schools now have about 6000 licenses for AVG antivirus software from Grisoft. It is
FREE for us and home use. Checkout http://www.grisoft.com
to download the anti-virus at home. All computers
in the parish running Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 or NT should have this software
installed on them. We no longer have a license for SOPHOS. Please follow the
instructions for removing SOPHOS or any other anti virus software if it is installed on your computer and install
AVG.
-
Monthly updates of new virus definitions will be automatic like Sophos. Once
the AVG software is installed on a networked computer, the program will automatically
update the software when the machine logs onto the network.
-
It is imperative that all networked computers are assigned a local school
domain so that software installation and upgrades will be possible. A procedure
will be outlined.
Removing
Sophos or other anti virus software:
-
The AVG software is available on your local school servers. Before you
can install it onto your computer please follow the steps listed to uninstall
any other virus protection programs such as Sophos, McAfee, or Symantec.
-
Click on the Add/Remove icon in the control panel and remove any anti virus
software already installed. Do not restart your computer yet if prompted.

2. On Windows 95, 98, or Me
computers all that is necessary for installation is that you are logging onto
the Parish domain.
Windows XP Professional computers
must first be joined to the Parish domain and your network username must have
Administrative privledges
so that the installation will be
successful.
3. You will probably have to restart the
computer at least once to obtain the latest virus definitions for the program.
If you do not get updated virus
definitions on a regular basis launch the
AVG program. This most often prompts the program to retrieve them from the
server.
