Vermilion Parish Middle School Teacher of the Year – Michelle Caldwell

Michelle Dore Caldwell is a sixth grade teacher at Meaux Elementary. She has been an  educator since 1997 and has worked in Vermilion Parish since 1998.

Mrs. Caldwell believes that if you are an educator, teaching is in your blood. She is a "student centered" teacher. If you walk into her room, you will find her students in groups or working with a partner. The students are always encouraged to ask questions.

As an exceptional teacher, she takes the time to plan activities that will expand the concept being taught. She tries to apply concepts to real life situation students can relate to. Mrs. Caldwell stated that by doing that, the  students make the concept their own.

Professional Development is a part of her success as a teacher. She constantly strives to improve her teaching techniques by attending and participating in workshops and training sessions. She shares this knowledge at district professional development days where she presents for fellow teachers.

As part of a laptop initiative grant,  the students in her classroom have access to a laptop computer at all times.

Her reward for teaching is summed up on a magnet given to her by a student that reads, “A Special Teacher.. Because of you, I am richer…and I will always be grateful.”
