Angie Detraz Named the Region IV LACUE Early Childhood
Teacher of the Year
Recently it was announced that Angie Detraz, a Pre K
teacher at Dozier Elementary won the Region IV LACUE
(Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators)
Early Childhood Education Award.
Each year LACUE, the state's technology association,
honors teachers and leaders with awards in each region,
and at the state level.
At the Annual Conference in New Orleans in December, all
regional winners will be recognized. From there, a state
winner will be named for each category. Detraz will
attend the 31st Annual LACUE Conference in December to
receive her regional award.
She is a 1991 Vermilion Catholic graduate, who received
her Bachelor's Degree in 1995 from UL. She has been in
the Vermilion Parish School District serving as a Pre K
and Kindergarten teacher since she received her degree. She spent 4 years at Eaton Park in a
bilingual kindergarten class and has been at Dozier the
past 16 years.
Ms. Detraz was nominated for this Early Childhood award
by her Principal Karla Toups because of her use of
technology (computers, iPads, Promethean Board, etc.)
in the classroom.
In the past year and a half, Detraz applied for several
Donors Choose Project grants and was able to receive two
iPads and a new computer through that funding.
In her "A is for Apple, B is for Ball, I is for Ipad"
Donorschoose grant proposal, Detraz shares her vision
for iPad use. "Without a doubt, we live in a world
filled with technology unlike ever before. At times
though, it is difficult for schools to receive
additional funding for extra resources. I offer
technology lessons to my Pre K students daily. My goal
this year is to introduce a tablet to our classroom. Our
school currently has our own iPad app website, I can see
how many great apps are out there. I would place an iPad
in centers and use it with our class white board. In Pre
K classrooms, students learn A is for Apple and B is for
Ball. I would like for my students to learn "I" is for
iPad! With an iPad, dock connector, and case, my
students and I could use them daily in our centers and
by combining it in a whole class setting with our
When Detraz received word that she won an iPad her 2nd
iPad in August, the excited Pre K teacher stated how
"grateful she was for the help receiving it because
students today are tech savvy before entering school
now. We know Ipads can be effective with children in a
