Sharing "Great Moments at Dozier Elementary"

Vermilion Parish Schools recently hosted their Annual "Young Author's Contest." The event is sponsored by the Louisiana Reading Association and the Regional Acadiana Reading Council.  Acadiana Reading Council had entries from Acadia, Vermilion, Iberia, Lafayette, and the Diocese of Lafayette.  Students from seventeen parish school participated.  Recently the Parish Winners were announced and sent to the Acadiana Reading Council for judging. The students placing first at the Regional Level were submitted at the state level.


Dozier Elementary had ten students who placed first at the Parish Level. Those students included:  Sofia Castro, Chad Istre, Joseph Bares, Alexandra Granger, Zachary Domingue Shealon Casey,  Hanna Walton, Gavin Hebert and Braden LeBlanc and Eddie Armond (placed in two categoies).

Once the Parish winners were named, those students then advanced to the Regional Level: All ten Dozier Elementary students placed at the regional level. In Kindergarten: Chad Iste placed 1st in Fiction, while Gavin Hebert placed first in Non Fiction. Sofia Castro placed 2nd in Fiction and Hanna Walton placed 5th in Non Fiction. All four Kindergarten students were in Hope Hebert's class. In 1st grade, Joseph Bares placed first in fiction. He is in Cindy Hargrave's class. Braden LeBlanc, a 2nd grader in Pam Cheek's class, placed first in non fiction, while 3rd grader Alexandre Granger from Melissa Romero's class placed 4th in fiction. Zachary Domingue, a fourth grader in Jennifer Toups and Maleigha Viator's classes won 1st in fiction at his grade level.  In 5th grade, two students from Andrea Bernard's class placed. Those two students were Eddie Armond who placed 1st in non fiction and 2nd in poetry and Shealon Casey who placed 2nd in fiction.

All Vermilion Parish students placing 1st at the Regional Level were submitted to the state level. Of the ten winners at Dozier Elementary, six  of those students had submissions at the state level. Those at Dozier Elementary with 1st place regional wins were: Chad Istre- "Aliens" Fiction 1st Place-Kindergarten; Gavin Hebert  "My Pet Snake"1st Place Kindergarten Nonfiction; Joseph Bares "The Frog Story" Fiction 1st Place in 1st Grade: Braden LeBlanc "Camping"  Nonfiction 1st Place- 2nd Grade; Zachary Domingue "Stranded" 1st Place Fiction in 4th grade and Eddie Armond "John Cena: "My Favorite: Superstar Guy" 1st Place-5th grade Nonfiction. 

Of those who moved to the State Level, these students placed with the Louisiana Reading Association.  Zachary Domingue placed 2nd, while Chad Istre, Gavin Hebert, Joseph Bares and Braden LeBlanc placed 3rd in each of their divisions.

All Louisiana Reading Council and Acadiana Reading Council winners will be recognized at the “Young Author Reception” on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 1:00 at the South Regional Library on Johnston Street in Lafayette.
