Dozier Elementary recently announced Kay Lurry as the school’s
2012-13 “Teacher of the Year”. With Lurry’s family present, Principal Karla
Toups successfully surprised her with the announcement at the school wide
Dozier Elementary Christmas Musical on Friday, December 16, 2011.
Lurry is an educator at Dozier with more than two decades years of
experience, all of which have been in 4th grade. She works with a team
teacher Lori Porter and teaches two sections of ELA subjects at the Erath
elementary school.
The 4th grade teacher obtained a bachelor's degree in education from NLU-(now
ULM) in Monroe, LA, as well as a master's degree in education from NLU
majoring in reading education, with a minor in psychology.
Lurry credits her mother as one reason she chose to teach. Lurry stated,
"My mother was a librarian and I loved to see her work with children and
develop their appreciation for reading through programs at the public
library." She finished by saying "I hope that I can help my students
develop a love for reading which will impact their education and their
future."
