With the arrival of Spring, the fourth grade students in Ms. Kayla Lucas and Ms. Lori Porterís classes at Dozier Elementary are adopting a more hands-on approach to learning. With help from Master Gardener Dan Davenport, they are cultivating the school's first on-site garden. With direction from several student leaders, the group began the project by planting peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and herbs. During the planting process, student teachers incorporated lessons on topics such as pollination, ecosystems, parts of a plant and life cycles.

The garden is a part of the American Heart Associationís initiative to promote healthier eating habits for kids. With this project, Dozierís 4th grade teachers are providing a great way to introduce students to fresh, healthy foods while teaching the novice gardeners about collaboration, problem-solving and the importance of community involvement. This creative approach to learning provides an excellent opportunity to incorporate math, science and English lessons through student led engagement in a long term hands-on project.
