Edson L. Davis, Jr.

2017 Erath High School Athletic Hall of Fame

Edson L. Davis, Jr. is a 1987 Erath High School graduate.  As a student at Erath High School, Davis played football and baseball, and was a member of the track team.

Davis played football for Erath for four years.  He lettered all four years as a running back, defensive back, kicker and punt returner.  He was selected as all-district second team defense and honorable mention offensive back in his sophomore year.  As a junior, Davis was all-district and all-parish second team running back.  In his senior year, he was all-district kicker, all-district second team running back, all-parish first team running back, all-parish first team offense, all-parish second team kicker, KROF Radio all-parish running back, and Louisiana 2-AA academic all-state.

Davis kicked a 44 yard field goal in 1986 against Catholic High.  This set a record at Erath High School for the longest field goal and remains unbroken.  Davis is the only person from Erath to have kicked two field goals for longer than 40 yards.  From 1983 to 1986, he rushed for 2,194 yards and 27 touchdowns.  He ran for 1,036 yards on 166 carries in 1986.  In his last high school game, Davis set the single game rushing record with 221 yards against Delcambre.  He broke Jimmy Domingues’ record of 209 yards against Jeanerette in 1960.  Davis kicked off the ball seven times when Erath played Delcambre in 1985.  Every time, the ball landed in the end zone, denying Delcambre the chance to return the ball.

Davis lettered four years in track.  He was a member of the 1987 District 7-AA Championship team.  This was the first time Erath had won a district championship in track in 18 years.  He was the District Champion that year in javelin with a throw of 172’3”.

He was a member of the Beta Club, Industrial Arts Club and Math Club.  Davis was elected to the Powder Puff Court for four years and was selected King in 1986.

Davis is the son of Edson L. Davis of Louisville, KY and Charlotte Suire Davis (’59) of Lafayette, LA.  He has three siblings; Courtney Liberto, Yvette Frederick and Chris Davis.  He is the father of three sons; Dylan, Ethan and Bowen. Jenny Hargrave (’87) is his significant other and she has two daughters, Mackenzie and Emily Hargrave.

Davis earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the College of Art and Architecture at University of Southwestern Lafayette (now UL Lafayette) in 1992.  He has been a residential designer since 1991.  He has received numerous design awards for excellence in his field.
