Curtis Trahan Scholarship  (Print)

CRITERIA FOR PIANO MINORS OR MAJORS

1. Interested scholarship recipients will meet with the Piano Lab chairperson and committee members at the beginning of their junior or senior year in piano.

2. Scholarship recipients must be declared piano minors or piano majors and must be full-time students at their chosen universities.

3. New applicants must submit two complete references (names, addresses, and phone numbers) of people who can evaluate the potential for music study.

4. Applicants should submit applicable high-school transcripts to the committee two weeks before graduation with a minimum grade-point average of 2.75.

5. Scholarship applicants must appear before a member of the music faculty for a live audition. The college adjudicator will determine the date of the audition.  Applicants are cautioned that there are many students who audition for minor and major placements in piano.  Delaying an audition could cancel your application.

Classical Piano Audition Requirements

Students wishing to audition as a piano minor or major at the college level should prepare the following and complete the pre-testing with the EHS Lab instructor prior to the college audition.

  • Pianists must perform three works in contrasting styles from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary eras. Memorization is required.

  • Technique: scales, chords, cadences, and arpeggios as according to Level III from the LMTA Handbook.

  • Students will also be asked to sight-read a piano piece rated at approximately the early intermediate level according to the LMTA State Handbook.

  • Students will take a theory placement exam equal to the Level III LMTA State Test.

  • It is recommended that the above four requirements be completed with the lab instructor at least two weeks before the college audition date.

6. Cumulative GPA’s will be checked at the end of each semester to determine eligibility for the following semester. The minimum GPA to receive piano scholarship monies is a 2.50 over-all with a 3.50 in piano.

7. The EHS Lab Scholarship Committee will review recipients each semester.

8. Recipients for continued piano scholarships should demonstrate the highest ideals of study and class attendance, and progress towards completion of a degree in music.

9. A semester refund is due by the student if he/she drops out of minor or major piano study or drops below the hours necessary to maintain full-time status.

10. In accepting the offer of financial aid from the Curtis Trahan Scholarship Fund, the student understands that there is a mutual commitment on the part of the student and the committee

13. For the purpose of determining all areas regarding the Curtis Trahan Scholarship —eligibility, scholarship amounts, auditions, scholarship policy and procedures, the scholarship committee of the EHS Piano Lab will consist of 2 members from the administration, 1 staff member, and the piano lab instructor.

That committee will make the final determination for scholarship recipients and amounts.
