Golf Channel visits VP schools!

As Vermilion Parish began its restoration efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita, Chevron awarded money to help in the crusade of rebuilding schools along the Gulf Coast. Equipment was purchased and teachers were trained with new technology and science resources.  In the fall of 2007, the implementation of the new equipment began in Vermilion Parish classrooms.

This Sunday, November 1, 2009 The Golf Channel will air a piece showcasing students and teachers of Vermilion Parish. As Chevron is sponsoring a PGA golf tournament occurring in Mississippi, they wished to publicize their efforts in philanthropy since Hurricane Rita. Our own Vermilion Parish was the favored choice for Chevron since the Energy for Learning Grant has impacted so many students in our own community.

Officials from The Golf Channel and Chevron were in Vermilion Parish on Monday, October 26. The main focus for the cameramen and journalist were two classrooms in the Erath area. The two classrooms being showcased abound with dynamic lessons using Science equipment purchased after Hurricane Rita.

At Erath Middle School, Nanette Delcambre makes Science come to life for her sixth grade students. The school has changed its demographics this year as a first for Erath Middle housing only grades 6-8. As a result, they have a little more room to breathe, so a Science lab evolved using an empty classroom and equipment purchased with the Chevron Energy for Learning Grant. During the filming, Delcambre demonstrated to her students examples of exothermic and endothermic reactions. Afterward, the students worked collaboratively in conducting their own experiments.

As we entered the door of their classroom at LeBlanc Elementary School, Leah Trahan’s fourth grade students were engaged and excited. Mrs. Trahan fully involved her students in identifying how electric currents work to power objects as well as identifying insulators and conductors. Amazed at the discovery of Science, students utilized the equipment and technology purchased to expand efforts of the grant to the new school that began operation in August.

Vermilion Parish is proud of the efforts of all students, staff, and innovative leaders like Nanette Delcambre and Leah Trahan. All of Vermilion Parish can view the program this Sunday, November 1, 2009 on The Golf Channel. The three-minute expose’ will air at approximately 2 or 2:30 p.m. Central Time.

Important to the successes of Vermilion Parish students is the genuine concern and generosity of companies like Chevron. Their efforts will help to ensure that Vermilion Parish students are prepared to be productive contributors in the twenty first century.
