What are Anticipatory Guides & Opinionnaires?
Anticipatory Guide Opinionnaire
  • An Anticipatory Guide is a tool to help readers predict events before reading a story. Each of us reads more carefully if we predict what we think is going to happen and then watch for proof that we were either right or wrong.

    • An anticipatory guide helps the student to start thinking about a topic and so activates their background knowledge.
    • Prediction engages the reader with the text.
    • Checking the accuracy of predictions after reading and having to supply evidence from the text helps with deep processing.
  • Opinionnaires are developed by generating statements about a topic that forces students to take a stand for them or against them.  (See White & Johnson, 2001), and scenarios (Smagorinsky et al., 1987; White, 2004)
