An Anticipatory Guide is a tool to help readers predict
events before reading a story. Each of us reads more
carefully if we predict what we think is going to happen and
then watch for proof that we were either right or wrong.
An anticipatory guide helps the student to start
thinking about a topic and so activates their background
knowledge.
Prediction engages the reader with the text.
Checking the accuracy of predictions after reading and
having to supply evidence from the text helps with deep
processing.
Opinionnaires are developed by
generating statements about a topic that forces students to take
a stand for them or against them. (See White &
Johnson,
2001),
